The Basic Science Department of MCKV Institute of Engineering consists of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The students of 1st year, irrespective of any discipline, are under the supervision of the Basic Science Department. The department is devoted to nurture the fundamental principles of science required to augment the students’ basic understanding of engineering. As Science forms the backbone of any branch of Engineering, the faculty members with all their expertise, relentlessly work to bridge Science and Technology and make unswerving and tireless efforts towards the holistic development of students. The department has well experienced and qualified adequate full-time faculty members as per AICTE norms. Six of the faculty members of the department have doctoral degrees from Universities of National repute, and all the faculty members are actively engaged in research along with the teaching-learning activities. As a mark of their research activity, they have published books, monographs, and research articles in many reputed national & international journals and conference proceedings. More than 70 research articles from this department have already been published in international journals of repute. The faculty members of the Department have successfully guided 5 Research scholars towards completion of their PhD degree, two of them having received their degree from Jadavpur University, one from IIEST Shibpur and two from MAKAUT.
Some faculty members of the Basic Science Department are also members of the Board of Studies of MAKAUT where they design the syllabus of their respective subjects.
This department has well-equipped two physics laboratories, one chemistry laboratory, and one polymer research laboratory. The polymer research laboratory was developed in the year of 2002 by funding of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. Presently, four students are working towards their doctoral degree in this laboratory. Many UG Engineering students also use these laboratory facilities for their final year project works as well as to participate in competitions on technical events.
